St. Prassede’s and St. Pudentiana’s Basilicas
This itinerary leads us to the discovery of two little jewels from the Paleochristian time and Middle Ages, starting with the basilica dedicated to Saint Prassede, amazing example of Carolingian architecture. Inside the church we can enjoy the marvellous mosaics in the apse and on the triumphal and apsal arches, dating from the beginning of the IX century AD. On the apse Christ shows off over stylized clouds in background between the saints Peter, Pudentiana, Paul and Prassede and the pope Pascal I with a deacon; on the arches instead there are symbols and figures connected with two different passages in the Apocalypse.
A little further there’s the basilica dedicated to Saint Pudentiana, where we can enjoy an apsal mosaic dating from the end of the IV century AD, where Christ is sitting on a throne among the apostles and Saint Pudentiana and Saint Prassede, with the cross and the symbols of the Evangelists on top.
