Augustus and the stone city
In the biography written by Suetonius, Augustus praised himself because he found a city built in bricks and left one built in marble, meaning that during his reign Rome was embellished with many monuments. But is this true or not? During our walk we’ll discover Augustus’ Rome, enjoying its imposing remains and looking for the most hidden relics. We are going to start from Marcellus’ Theatre and from Octavia’s Portico to go to see the remains of Agrippa’s Thermae, the majestic Pantheon and the Sundial. At the end we are going to reach the ara Pacis, symbol and iconographical manifesto of Augustus’ policy, and the mausoleum where the first emperor of Rome and many of his successors were buried.
