The monumental complex of St. Agnes outside the Walls

Along the via Nomentana there are the catacombs where St. Agnes was buried and nearby emperor Constantine built a basilica, in the 7th century replaced by the present church. Inside the basilica there are precious medieval mosaics and many baroque artworks, among which the beautiful wooden ceiling and the main altar with the amazing ciborium by Nicolas Cordier. The mausoleum of Constantina, or mausoleum of St. Costanza, is part of the complex and it was built by emperor Constantine’s daughter close to the basilica. After being used as a burial place, in the Middle Ages it became the baptistry of St. Agnes and then an indipendent church, but inside it it’s still possible to enjoy marvellous mosaics from the 4th century AD.
